Issue 15 — April 3, 2008

April CloseUp: VolunteerismThis month's CloseUp focuses on a topic that is easy to overlook. Not because it's unimportant but because it's so fundamental to how nonprofits operate that we often take it for granted. That's why this month we are taking the time to explore volunteerism.

At last count 61 million people are donating their time in just the US alone. 61 million! If you care about housing issues, the environment, child welfare, economic development, women's rights, or electoral politics, you have to care about volunteerism. In the U.S. most, if not all, of our core social services are made poss ible by nonprofits that rely on volunteers. Even IssueLab has 'em!

So, what are these 61 million people up to? How has their experience of volunteering changed them? What's different about young volunteers, baby boomer volunteers, or virtual volunteering? With the help of our guest editorialist, Nancy Macduff, this month's collection of nonprofit research addresses all these questions and more.

If you know of research on this topic: case studies, reports, data sets, or analyses, let us know about it. We can't very well build the world's largest publishing forum for nonprofit research without your help! Uh, was that a call for volunteers?

With National Volunteer Week just around the corner why not visit our friends over at VolunteerMatch to see how you can get involved in your own local community!

» May Call for Research: Veteran Health

The recent five-year anniversary of the Iraq war resulted in a number of news stories about the challenges facing returning veterans. In recognition of Memorial Day, IssueLab will build on this topic by focusing our May CloseUp on the topic of veteran health and on the research produced by those nonprofits that serve and support veterans.

Our veteran health CloseUp will include research on the following topics:

  • Veteran access to quality health care;
  • Mental health challenges for veterans;
  • Long-term health effects for veterans of past wars;
  • Financing long-term care;

    If you are a nonprofit and are doing work in the field of veteran health please register at IssueLab today.

  • » The Few, the Smart, the Tenacious

    We are still accepting applications for our summer internship program. If you are someone who cares about social issues and giving people free and open access to nonprofit research, get in touch. This program is a great opportunity for individuals who are interested in online research, marketing, publishing, and activism to build their skill set and contribute to a great cause.

    If you know someone who cares about social issues, and is hard working and tenacious - point them in our direction.
